I spend a lot of time blogging about Second Life, as do many others. How many others? No one knows for sure, but it’s at least many hundreds of avatars. While I’ve gained much personal satisfaction from writing posts and participating in the SL blogging community, I always wondered which blogs were the most popular.
It’s a difficult question to answer, because measurement of “popular” can mean many things. It could be the number of feed subscribers, total pageviews, average pageviews, number of comments, number of links to the blog or any other conceivable statistic. In fact, blog ranking is a very difficult science. So I did what anyone faced with a tricky problem should do.
I let someone else figure it out for me.
That’s right, the “someone else” in this case is Technorati, a web service that tracks and searches blogs in real time. Technorati tracks tens of millions of blogs worldwide and keeps a database of statistics, including their own definition of “rank”. It’s not exactly clear how they specifically calculate rank, but evidently it involves a combination of statistics. Even better, they expose their database to the public via a programmatic web interface (API). That was enough to inspire me further.
I needed only to write a program to send a list of SL-oriented website URLs to the Technorati API and it would return me all the available statistics! Writing the program (in PHP, as it turned out) was relatively straightforward, but where could I find an extensive list of Second Life blogs? I surely did not want to make a list like that myself.
There was only one place to look: Second Life Blogger’s NING site, where administrator Zoe Connolly has prepared what is probably the most authoritative list. You can tell by its tagline:
“Behold!...The World’s Largest Blogroll of Second Life Links”.
The blogroll was not quite what I wanted, however. It contained links to flickr pages, Google groups and other non-blogs. Some of the listed blogs were physically gone, and others merely had an empty page left, saying this blog is “closed”. Some had no visible SL content at all, and a few had no current postings – for more than two years! I made an executive decision and took these out. But I added a few notable blogs that for some unexplainable reason were not included on the list.
Finally, armed with a decent list of blogs, I fed it into the PHP program and collected the results. After sorting and more data cleansing than I’d care to admit, I arrived at the following ranked list of Second Life blogs, perhaps the only one in existence.
Some observations:
- The rank is out of ALL blogs tracked by Technorati worldwide. So, for example, if the rank is 100,000th, that means there are 99,999 other blogs in the world that Technorati believes are more popular. Being in the top 50 or even 10,000 is quite an achievement.
- The #1 ranked SL blog, Massively, has significant Second Life content written almost daily by Tateru Nino, but is in reality a blog dedicated to all MMO’s, Second Life being only a portion of their content. That’s why Massively is ranked so highly.
- Second Life’s official blog is ranked #2, which makes sense as it is an obvious focal point for many avatars.
- The #3 SL blog, New World Notes, written by Hamlet Au, is the highest ranked “independent” blog dedicated to Second Life.
- Vint Falken’s #4 ranked SL blog is unique in that it is the highest ranked non-commercial independent publication. Perhaps Vint should consider some advertising?
- I cleaned the list as best as time permitted; there are no doubt more errors in the list, such as incorrect blog names, probably a few more dead blogs and other miscues. There are over 500 blogs, give me a break, already!
- Towards the bottom of the list you’ll notice the Technorati rank repeats in blocks. I suspect the Technorati ranking formula uses certain raw statistics, and these blogs likely have identical underlying statistics. I put them in URL alphabetical order.
- A very few blogs do not seem to have a Technorati rating, including the likely popular Metaversally Speaking. I am not sure why this occurs, and I obviously could not include them.
- Is this list accurate? Maybe, maybe not. But it’s probably somewhat close to reality, because the top blogs seem to make sense.
Finally, as this is a first attempt at ranking, I’d appreciate any suggestions to improve the list. If I’ve missed a blog, please add it in the comments and I’ll include it in the list next time. If there’s a dead blog in there, let me know about it. And remember, I didn't calculate the rank - Technorati did. My apologies in advance to anyone whose blog I’ve missed or otherwise screwed up!
[UPDATE] Due to many suggestions, and a deeper inspection of the list, I'll be producing an improved version next week sometime. A significant portion of the list are actually dead blogs, in spite of them having high ranks from Technorati due to other blogs still pointing at them. Meanwhile, many suggestions on missing blogs have been received and will be incorporated.

Linden Lifestyles (#13) has officially closed several months ago - you will only get archived content there.
Overheard in Second Life - the last one on your list - is rather new. It has potential to become very popular.
I am surprised (and even shocked a bit) to be among the top 50 (after 1+2+13 are taken out /me grins), especially since a lot of blogs I personally value higher than mine are much lower.
as anywhere, loudness seems to be rewarded more than quality :-)
you'd better check that list Arminex there are a lot that don't exist anymore...so those rankings are old. I know one website had closed over a year ago, and Linden Lifestyles closed not months ago but probably a year ago also. Sorry to burst your bubble...
but thats based on stats over probably a year so some of the blogs would be bumped up I guess.

I see my blog is missing. It's been up over a year and is syndicated via World of SL. I see many on that list that have not been updated for months or are defunct.
Metaversally Speaking isn't listed on Technorati, DMOZ or.. well.. anywhere! *laughs*
I keep meaning to do it, but the blog seems to be doing alright regardless.. I'm clueless as to why, but thanks for the mention nevertheless - I'll try and stop being so lazy and get listed in these fandangled things! ;-)

While the program seemed to work, the thing I was unsure of was the quality of the list of blogs. No one can know all of them, as we can only follow a few. I knocked out the ones I personally knew were dead, but I expected there were more and was not about to test 520+ blogs (and there were MANY you don't see that I already eliminated).
Tell you what - I will redo this in a week or two using a better list of blogs, and hopefully everyone can point out the dead blogs to me. Also, tell me the name of your blog and I'll try to include it next time around.
@Paisley - Technorati' ranking is based partially on links from other blogs, which likely still exist. That's why they still "rank", because those dead blogs still exist and can often be read, even today.
@Peter - I'll take a look at WoSL's list and perhaps merge it with mine.
@Gospeed, Tarissa (and anyone else) just drop the name of your blog in the comments and I'll add it to the ist.
@Prad - suggest you sign up for Technorati, it's very easy to go to their site and "claim" your blog. You also get some interesting stats that you can't easily get elsewhere.
My blog is Fallobst (http://windfallobst.wordpress.com/) I love statistics and lists (except The List), but would never even think about doing it due to the mountain of work it involves...so, good work and thanks for doing this for us!

Since it still sort of shocks me that people read my blog, I am pretty tickled at my placing in the list. I'll cross my fingers that when you redo things I won't slip down and if I do, it won't be too badly.

Now, with so many SL blogs out there, you'd think we'd be having many more SL Blogger parties. I'll IM Zoe right away!
So many of these I never heard of so it's been a great post to even get the word out about more blogs.
I agree with some of what's said here though, some of these blogs haven't been updated in months and I think are retired. Their ranking still holds so I'm not sure how you can take them off the list other than manually checking each one and having some system to weed out retired ones.
Technorati shows botgirl.blogspot.com ranked 127,343, not 237,372 (at least when I log in.)
@botgirl, yes, I noticed the same effect. It turns out that the Technorati API returns a RANK value that is different than what is shown when you login. It seems to be consistent for all sites, so I believe it to be useful at least for ranking the blogs - in other words, it helps us determine the rank, and that's about all.
@everyone - yeah, there are more dead's to remove. I guess I'll start working on that...

Brad, you do not need to actively USE it to be included. I se it for my RL blog, but never bothered to sign up for my SL blogs - still both were accessed within Technorati and even acquired some authority :-)
When you actively register/use Technorati, you have a bunch of features more. But this does not affect IF you are listed or not.

Just my thoughts on how to tweak your list, it may require using a bit more than just technorati. Google Page Rank can also help determine some of this ranking if you want to use it or factor it into your decision. For instance, if a blog is ranked at 49 and another is ranked at 50, but the page rank for 50 is well higher than the one at 49, the influence of that blog should push it over 49. Also can't you use the "last updated" result from technorati to determine if a blog is still alive or not? So say if not posted in the past 30 days have your program automatically remove it from the list.
Other than that, nice list and a pretty cool idea.
Great suggestion Leo! I really like the idea of using the last update date, although by going through some sites manually, there are a few that officially declare they are closing, and others that are still alive but just incredibly infrequent.
Bad news: the Technorati API returns "1970-01-01 00:00:00 GMT" as the last update date for the few that I've sampled so far. I guess they don't really track that information. Also, there apparently is no Google API to reveal pagerank.
Awww mine isn't there. Oh well a lot of my traffic seems to come from non Second Life related visitors. I always wonder what they must have thought when they arrive and decided to look around lol.

I would love to see the list parsed by category such as business blogs, fashion blogs, news blogs, commentary, personal experience blogs. How you would define the categories and put blogs in the right bucket I have no idea but it might give the rankings additional meaning.
@ Peter, any Technorati user thats also a SL blogger will always be higher in the Technorati rankings.
There is no real way to solidly rank the blogs unless you wanna go straight to the math of the page views and visitors counts for each one.
The Technorati method seems to be the best method for it organizing.
But for example, try rankings on digg or reedit, and the list will shift some
@annotoole - sorry for neglecting you, but I've now discovered large numbers of missing blogs by searching more sources. I'm working on a new list now that will include yours. Man, it's a lot of work, tho.
@Chestnut - That would be great, but I have no idea how that could be done. There is no way to classify blogs other than by reading them. And there are many, many hundreds of them. Worse, some will fit into multiple or no category.
@Brad/DoubleDown - You're right, ranking blogs is really a matter of opinion. Is it simply pageviews? Or is it # of unique visitors? Or links? Something else? Or all of the above? All of that information is not available either, so I simply gave up and had someone else (Technorati) do it for me.

Surprised my team blog, Phantom's Republic isn't on there. We ARE on technorati, and I do have it tagged with "Second Life." Our rank is in the 602,000nds, so we would have been around 160-something on your list.

Your list is incomplete - I know that you stated that it was... But knowing the list isn't accurate and the publishing it - well it seems as though you have other goals? I'm not sure why you would publish a list that has such old blogs and then not include some of the newer hotter blogs... Strange.
